Completing the Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage (RLD) course in May 2024 has been a transformative experience for me. This award-winning technique, developed by Sally Kay, focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet to support the body’s lymphatic system. Initially researched within Cancer Care, RLD offers a unique approach to managing conditions like lymphoedema, especially following breast cancer treatment, where swelling and psychological effects can significantly impact the quality of life.
Breast cancer is a significant concern. It is estimated that in 2024:
- 30,500 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This represents 25% of all new cancer cases in women in 2024.
- 5,500 Canadian women will die from breast cancer. This represents 13% of all cancer deaths in women in 2024.
- On average, 84 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day.
- On average, 15 Canadian women will die from breast cancer every day.
- 290 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 60 will die from breast cancer.
Experts estimate that from 5% to 40% of women will experience some level of lymphedema after breast cancer surgery. The swelling and discomfort associated with lymphoedema can further compound the emotional and psychological challenges survivors face. Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage has shown promising results in alleviating these symptoms, offering a holistic method to improve the lives of those affected.
RLD isn’t just limited to lymphoedema. It can also be beneficial for a variety of other conditions, similar to how Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is used. Whether it’s arthritis, asthma, eczema, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or even sinus problems and migraines, RLD provides a gentle yet effective means of support. The course has deepened my understanding of the profound impact reflexology can have on the lymphatic system, and I am excited to bring these benefits to my clients, helping them achieve better health and well-being through this specialized reflexology technique.
